Facebook CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg were the featured speaker for Harvard University’s first ever black-only graduation ceremony. The event took place on May 23rd and over 170 African American students attended, as well as 530 guests to watch it all happen. Zuckerberg gave a great talk about how overcoming obstacles is important for having success in life. He shared some of his story on how the creation of Facebook was born, and what it took for him to overcome it all and make the biggest social media platform that the world has ever seen. It was a very touching ceremony, and Zuckerberg was happy to be a big part of it as this is a school that holds a special place in his heart.
The New York born native attended Ardsley High School but eventually transferred to the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire during his third year. Nonetheless, he ended up attending Harvard for college, where he created Facebook, which was originally called “thefacebook” and launched on February 4, 2004. Over time, this social media website grew into more than just a “Harvard” thing. Since running his business, Zuckerberg has become one of the most famous people in the internet and technology industry. The website’s humble beginnings have morphed into a resource tool, way to interact with people, and it keeps getting upgraded each year with more features to play with. Zuckerberg is also a generous donor, as he has made sure to put his hard earned money to good causes.
Zuckerberg traveled back to his old stomping grounds this spring to speak at Harvard’s first-ever black graduation ceremony. Not only was he able to share his story with the new graduates, but he got to relive the start of his career on his former campus.
