Computer Science Professor Andrew Appel Talks Election Security at Penn State
Andrew Appel is one of the country's top experts in computer science and cyber security. That made him an ideal choice to keynote the recent Symposium on Election Security held at Penn State University. The event was held at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center. With the swirl of controversy over our election process made this conference extremely timely and authorities from around the country were able to gather to discuss policy and solutions to various threats. Appel's talk was titled, "Principles and Protocols for Transparent Counting of Secret Ballots." He discussed the history of voting, addressed the ways elections can be compromised today and shared what the consensus is on how we can accurately and safely count votes. Appel is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University. He has been a member of Princeton's faculty since 1986 and was Department Chair from 2009-15. Appel serves as a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and is a prior editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems. He has written several noteworthy books on computers. Appel has testified when issues related to computer technology arise in the legal system. He has a bachelor's degree from Princeton and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.
