He was born in born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended school at Bowdoin College where he finished with a degree in economics. Druckenmiller then enrolled in a doctoral economics program at the University of Michigan, but dropped out after being given a job as an oil analyst at Pittsburgh National Bank. Druckenmiller rose through the ranks of PNB's stock research section before departing in 1981 to establish his own business, Duquesne Capital Management. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he worked as a consultant for a variety of hedge funds, including the George Soros Quantum Fund. Druckenmiller spent the most of his time after the tech bubble broke working for Duquesne Capital Management. By the time he closed the fund in 2010, it was believed to be worth $12 billion. According to Forbes, Stanley Druckenmiller is worth around $2.5 billion, ranking him 149th among Americans. A percentage of his money is donated to humanitarian causes, particularly those concerning medical research, education, and poverty.
