Steve Berkowitz Biography

Berkowitz was the CEO of Ask.com before joining Microsoft. Berkowitz, as CEO, was in charge of all IAC Search Media operations. Berkowitz is credited with forming the management team that coordinated the turnaround of Ask.com, presently the second-largest pure search site on the Internet, in his prior capacity as president of Ask.com (a Web property of IAC Search Media). He made the important choice in September 2001 to buy Teoma Technologies and integrate their unique approach to Web-wide search into the Ask Jeeves core properties. He also led the redesign of Ask.com, which enhanced usability and eliminated pop-ups and banner adverts in favor of a more contextually relevant search experience. As a result, customer happiness has continuously increased since 2002, and the firm more than quadrupled its income from the time Berkowitz joined the company and the time it was bought by IAC/InterActiveCorp in March 2005. Berkowitz was the president and COO of IDG Books before to joining IAC Search Media, where he successfully built the "Dummies" line of books into a famous consumer brand spanning everything from C++ to pet care. He also handled IDG's purchases of CliffsNotes, Frommer's Travel Guides, Betty Crocker Cookbooks, and JK Lasser's Tax Guides, which not only diversified the firm's holdings but also established the company as a global consumer book brand. Berkowitz grew raised in New York and graduated from the State University of New York at Albany with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He resides in Alamo, California, with his wife Carol and two daughters.
