Majora Carter has done her part to positively impact urban neighborhoods. On Thursday, she traveled to Nashville and talked about her work as the keynote speaker at the 22nd annual J.U.M.P Christmas Extravaganza.
Carter was the perfect speaker for this event, which focuses on raising awareness for Nashville's Jefferson Street and the surrounding area. The afternoon festivities were hosted at the Cal Turner Family Center's Meharry Medical College by Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership.
In addition to Carter's presentation, they honored several people with Candle Light Awards. General admission tickets were available for $75.
In the early part of her career, Carter founded and served as executive director of Sustainable South Bronx. She led efforts to restore waterfront areas and created the Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training program.
After leaving SSB, Carter started her own private consultancy, the Majora Carter Group. Fast Company named her one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2010.
Carter was one of the early personalities that made TED Talks popular and her presentation was one of the first released on the TED.com website. She serves as a fellow for the New York Institute for the Humanities.
