About Tomas Jimenez

Tomas Jimenez Biography

At Stanford University, Tomás Jiménez teaches sociology as an assistant professor. The Center for Social Cohesion also counts him as a fellow. As a Fellow at Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Professor Jiménez is now on sabbatical for a year (CASBS). Immigration, assimilation, socioeconomic mobility, and ethnic and racial identity are the main topics of his study and writing. In order to understand how unbroken Mexican immigration influences the ethnic identity of later-generation Mexican Americans, the author of "Replenished Ethnicity: Mexican Americans, Immigration, and Identity" (University of California Press, 2010) draws on participant observation and interviews. The book has received the 2011 Distinguished Book Award from the Sociology of Latinos/as Section of the American Sociological Association. The American Sociological Review (forthcoming), American Journal of Sociology, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Social Science Quarterly, DuBois Review, and Annual Review of Sociology are other journals where Professor Jiménez has published this study. He is engaged in three projects at the moment. The first study, which is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Stanford United Parcel Service Endowment Fund, and Stanford Institute for Research in the Social Sciences, examines how members of the host society (people who were born in the US and have US-born parents) take part in the assimilation process. It does this by using in-depth interviews with members of the host society and observations made in East Palo Alto, Cupertino, and Berryessa, three different subregions of Silicon In a subsequent effort, Lorena Castro, a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford, and I examined a sample of US history textbooks for high school students published between 1930 and 2005 to examine how immigration shapes the national identity of the United States. In a third project, political scientist Deborah Schildkraut (Tufts), social psychologist Yuen Ho (UCLA), and social psychologist John Dovidio (Yale) use lab experiments, survey data, and in-depth interviews to understand how contextual factors influence immigrants' and host-society members' sense of belonging and related intergroup attitudes, behaviors, and support for immigration policies in the United States. The Russell Sage Foundation is funding this endeavor. University of California, San Diego is where Professor Jiménez has previously taught. At the New America Foundation, he has also served as an Irvine Fellow. Prior to that, he worked as a legislative assistant on immigration, veterans' issues, housing, and election reform in Rep. Michael Honda's (CA-15) office as the American Sociological Association Congressional Fellow. He has published opinion editorials on the subject of immigrant integration for a number of important news organizations, including the Los Angeles Times, CNN.com, and the San Diego Union-Tribune. His work on policy has also been featured in papers for the Immigration Policy Center. He graduated from Santa Clara University with a B.S. in sociology and from Harvard University with an A.M. and a Ph.D. in sociology.
