Steve H. Hanke Biography

Steve H. Hanke is a Johns Hopkins University Professor of Applied Economics and Co-Director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise. Prof. Hanke is also a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., a Distinguished Professor at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia, a Senior Advisor at the Renmin University of China's International Monetary Research Institute in Beijing, a Special Counselor to the Center for Financial Stability in New York, a member of the International Advisory Board of the National Bank of Kuwait (chaired by Sir John Major), and a member of the Prof. Hanke has previously taught economics at Colorado School of Mines and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1976-77, he was a member of Maryland's Governor's Council of Economic Advisers; in 1981-82, he was a Senior Economist on President Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers; and in 1984-88, he was a Senior Advisor to the Joint Economic Committee of the United States Congress. Prof. Hanke was also a State Counselor to the Republic of Lithuania from 1994 to 1996 and the Republic of Montenegro from 1999 to 2003. In addition, from 1997 to 2002, he served as an advisor to the presidents of Bulgaria, Venezuela, and Indonesia. He was instrumental in the establishment of new currency systems in Argentina, Estonia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ecuador, Lithuania, and Montenegro. Prof. Hanke has also advised governments in a number of other nations, including Albania, Kazakhstan, and the former Yugoslavia. World Trade Magazine named him one of the twenty-five most important individuals in the world in 1998. Prof. Hanke is a Distinguished Associate of the International Atlantic Economic Society; a Doctor of Arts, Honoris Causa from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito; a Doctor of Economics, Honoris Causa from the Free University of Tbilisi; a Doctor of Economics, Honoris Causa from Istanbul K14lt14r University; and a Professor Asociado (the highest honor awarded to internationally recognized experts). Prof. Hanke is a well-known commodity and currency trader. He is now the Chairman of the Richmond Group Fund Co., Ltd., a global macro hedge fund headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. In addition, he serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Friedberg Mercantile Group, Inc. in Toronto. He was President of Toronto Trust Argentina in Buenos Aires throughout the 1990s, when it was the world's best-performing developing market mutual fund in 1995.
