Timothy Rasinski Ph.D Biography

Kent State University's Timothy Rasinski teaches literacy education courses. More than 50 books or curriculum programs on reading instruction have been co-authored or edited by him, and he has produced more than 200 papers. His best-selling book on reading fluency, The Fluent Reader, was published by Scholastic, and he is also a co-author of the Wright Group's award-winning fluency program, Fluency First. His research interests include struggling readers as well as word study and fluency in reading in elementary and middle schools. His reading-related research has appeared in journals including Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research, and has been referenced by the National Reading Panel. Tim is now working on the fluency section of the Handbook of Reading Research, Volume IV. Tim just completed a three-year stint on the International Reading Association Board of Directors, and from 1992 to 1999 he co-edited The Reading Teacher, the most popular publication in the world for literacy teaching. He has also worked as the Journal of Literacy Research's co-editor. Rasinski served as the organization's previous president and was honored with the A. B. Herr and Laureate Awards for his academic contributions to literacy instruction. Tim taught literacy instruction at the University of Georgia before moving to Kent State. He worked as a Title I teacher and elementary and middle school classroom teacher in Nebraska for a number of years. For his professional accomplishments and contributions to the disciplines of reading and literacy instruction, Dr. Rasinski was chosen in 2010 for induction into the International Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame.
