About Ted Widmer
Ted Widmer Biography
He developed programs to revitalize the teaching of American history and politics to a variety of groups, ranging from Muslim college students in historically anti-American regions of the world to elementary students in underfunded public school districts of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. From 2001 to 2006, he served as the center's first director at Washington College. In addition, he launched the George Washington Book Prize, which gives $50,000 to the author of the most excellent book on the foundation era, and the American Studies Institute, a joint venture with the State Department that invites young Muslims to the United States for summer programs (co-sponsored by Mount Vernon and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History). Dr. Widmer is also the editor of the two volumes of American Speeches: Political Oratory from Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton, which the Library of America published. His works include Martin Van Buren (2005), Campaigns: A Century of Presidential Races (co-authored with Alan Brinkley, 2001), and Young America: The Flowering of Democracy in New York City (1999). He often contributes to The American Scholar, The New York Observer, and The New York Times. He served as President Clinton's top advisor on foreign policy and speechwriter between 1997 to 2001. He formerly worked as a professor at Harvard University and earned his Ph.D., A.M., and A.B. Dr. Widmer's scholarly interests include the Colonial era, American presidential history, and the 19th and 20th centuries. Additionally, he is researching the history of anti-American sentiment worldwide and how American history influences political politics. His work as a Senior Research Fellow in the American Strategy Program will add to the vast New America Foundation literature on the origins of American foreign policy by evaluating American policy through the prism of American historical experience.
