Ted Strickland Biography

Ted Strickland has devoted his life to helping others as a former preacher, psychotherapist, politician, and governor of Ohio. Ted fought tirelessly as governor to provide opportunities for Ohioans. By enacting one of the country's most sophisticated energy laws, Ted helped Ohio become a pioneer in creating green energy jobs and stopped other states' escalating electricity prices. By keeping tuition hikes at the lowest rate in the country and becoming Ohio the first state to give free tuition to veterans from all around the country, Ted slammed open the doors to Ohio's colleges. Under Ted's direction, Ohio's elementary and secondary schools were awarded the Education Commission of the States' top honor for innovation in education. Ted put together a competent group of public officials that resembled Ohio for his cabinet and judicial selections. Ted was a passionate advocate for working families, kids, and veterans while serving in Congress. He played a significant role in increasing children's access to health insurance, ensuring that America maintained its obligations to our veterans, and bringing millions of dollars home to Ohio for investments in infrastructure, technology, economic development, and healthcare programs. Ted played a vital role in the passage of the Children's Health Insurance Program, which offers insurance to millions of kids countrywide. He was a vocal opponent of the Iraq War and a strong proponent of supporting the Appalachian Regional Commission. Ted, the eighth of nine children, was raised in a remote area in Scioto County by his mother and steelworker father. He didn't need to read a book on the problems of the working class. However, Ted was taught to be grateful and to stand up for others who couldn't stand up for themselves, even after their home burnt down and they were forced to live in their chicken hut. Ted, the only member of his family to go to college, graduated from Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary before following his vocation and serving his church by managing a Methodist children's home. He continued to the University of Kentucky, where he obtained a master's and then a Ph.D. in psychology to improve his capacity to assist others. Ted first met Frances Smith, now Frances Strickland, while a student at Kentucky. Twenty-seven years have passed since they got married. President Barack Obama chose Ted to represent the general population as a delegate to the 68th United Nations General Assembly after serving as governor. Additionally, he worked in New York as a senior counselor for the American Mission to the UN. Ted most recently served as the director of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, where he advocated for measures to support American working families.
