Anna Sawai Biography

Anna Sawai is a Japanese-New Zealand actress and singer who has received international recognition for her trailblazing work in film and television. Born on June 11, 1992, in Wellington, New Zealand, Sawai moved to Japan at the age of 10. She started her career in entertainment at 11, landing the title role in the 2004 Japanese production of Annie. Her early exposure to the industry paved the way for a diverse career spanning music and acting.

In 2013, Sawai became a lead vocalist for the Japanese pop group FAKY, known for their blend of R&B and dance music. She remained with the group until 2018, after which she transitioned to acting full-time. Her acting debut came in the 2009 martial arts film Ninja Assassin, followed by roles in Giri/Haji (2019) and F9: The Fast Saga (2021).

Sawai's international breakthrough occurred with her role as Naomi in the Apple TV+ series Pachinko (2022–present), based on Min Jin Lee’s novel. She further solidified her status with a starring role in the FX series Shōgun (2024), portraying Toda Mariko. Her performance earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the first Japanese actress and the first Asian woman to win in this category.  

Beyond her acting achievements, Sawai has been recognized for her influence in fashion and culture. In 2024, she was named a brand ambassador for Cartier and Dior, and she received the inaugural Fashion Newcomer Style Award from WWD.
