As science and technology improves, we find more out about the world around us. One of the latest discoveries, however, involved older satellite data. Kiel University researchers from Germany and the British Antartic Survey discovered a series of ancient continents deep under the surface of Antarctica. They used information from the European Space Agency's GOCE satellite to zero in on the find. The scientists were able to look under Antartica's ice and find geological formations known as cratons. They also found structures called orogens, which are the precursors to mountain ranges. These findings are able to tell us more about our most mysterious continent.  The researchers have a greater understanding of how Antarctica formed and what will happen to it in the future. There are follow-up experiments in the works like NASA's GRACE mission that will use this work as a basis for discovery. The hope is that there can be strategies developed to save a continent that is melting rapidly.
