As an explorer, Richard Wiese has a great appreciation for the world around us. He was able to bring that passion recently speaking at an event that raised money for endangered species.
Wiese was the guest speaker at the Beardsley Zoo's Endangered Species Gala in Fairfield, Connecticut. The event was held at the Patterson Club and raised over $100,000 for the zoo.
Some of the funds will be used to fund a new tiger habitat. Over 200 people attended the inaugural event and a second one is already planned for 2019.
Wiese sought adventure at an early age and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro at age 11. He later led an expedition on Kilimanjaro that led to the discovery of 29 new life forms.
In 2002, Wiese became the youngest president of the prestigious Explorers Club. He is also the author of the popular guidebook, "Born to Explore: How to Be a Backyard Adventurer."
Wiese gained an entirely new audience in 2011 when he started hosting and serving as executive producer for the ABC series, "Born to Explore with Richard Wiese." The program has regularly been nominated for Emmy Awards.
