CNN correspondent April Ryan is one of the more popular speakers in America today. She particularly addresses the state of race relations and will have some poignant remarks on the subject when she serves as keynote speaker for the University of Virginia's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
UVA has an entire schedule of events planned to recognize Dr. King under the theme, "Women in the Movement." Ryan's presentation takes place on January 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theater.
A 5:30 p.m. reception precedes Ryan's speaking engagement. Tickets are free, but registration is required through the Paramount Box Office.
As a prominent African American female reporter, Ryan is uniquely qualified to speak about the struggles and achievements of women of color. She has been a White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks since 1997.
Ryan also publishes a "Fabric of America" news blog for the organization. She is one of just three African-Americans to have served on the board of the White House Correspondents Association.
Ryan is the author of the three books and her first book, "The Presidency in Black and White," was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2015. She was named the Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists in 2017.
