Civil rights pioneer Xernona Clayton has direct experience working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That made her the ideal choice to serve as featured speaker at Auburn University Montgomery's MLK Jr. Legacy Breakfast on January 22.
AUM Assistant Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Nichole Thompson says Clayton was a natural choice due to her work with the Kings and the leadership role she takes on important issues. She will specifically talk about how others can be change agents during her presentation.
There is expected to be a crowd of up to 250 people on hand to hear from Clayton. Registration is available until January 15.
Clayton is the founder, president and CEO of the Trumpet Awards Foundation Inc that hosts the annual Trumpet Awards honoring the accomplishments of prominent African Americans. She started the organization after a 30-year association with Turner Broadcasting.
Clayton became the first black person in the South to host her own television show in 1967. She previously worked with Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and traveled with his wife, Dr. Coretta Scott King on her concert tours.
Clayton is the author of "I've Been Marching All the Time" and co-author of "The Peaceful Warrior." She is a recipient of the Mickey Leland Award from the National Association of Minorities in Cable.
