Chef, television personality, and author Chef Marcus Samuelsson was in Chicago earlier this month on March 8th to take part in a cooking demonstration and cookbook signing at the Macy’s on State Street. These demonstrations are based on a first come first serve basis, so many people had to RSVP ahead of time just to be sure that they would get a spot at the event. Samuelsson had a great time entertaining the visitors with his enthusiasm for food and showing people how to incorporate so many wonderful flavors into one fantastic dish. The recipes that he demonstrated were straight out of his cookbook titled “Marcus Off Duty: The Recipes I Cook At Home”, however they were not any less exciting than what you might find him preparing at a restaurant. His love for chasing flavorings and having stories behind his dishes in the kitchen were great examples of how he blended in with the audience so well.
Even though he was born in Ethiopia, Samuelsson was adopted by a Swedish family and spent the majority of his childhood in Gothenburg, Sweden. After expressing an interest in cooking to his Swedish maternal grandmother, he enrolled to study at the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg and also did apprenticeships in Switzerland and Austria. He didn’t come to the United States until 1991 when he had an opportunity to work as an apprentice at the famed Restaurant Aquavit in Manhattan, New York City. Samuelsson eventually became the executive chef at Restaurant Aquavit and became the youngest ever to get a three-star review on his work. In addition to cooking, the chef has been on a few television shows such as Top Chef, Iron Chef USA, Iron Chef America, Chopped, as well as frequent appearances on the Today Show.
Samuelsson visited Chicago earlier this month to visit with fans, cook a few things in a demonstration, and autograph cookbooks for other food fanatics.
