UNCF is hosting a special leaders luncheon December 6 that will feature noted civil rights activist Charlayne Hunter-Gault. She will serve as keynote speaker at the event that benefits historically black colleges and universities.
There will be over 400 people in attendance for all the festivities at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville. Last year, nearly $6 million in programs and scholarships were presented to UNCF Florida member schools and area students.
In addition to Hunter-Gault's speech, former NFL player will receive the Champion of Education award at the lunch. Individual tickets are available to the public for $100.
Hunter-Gault was the first African-American to enroll at the University of Georgia in 1961. That courageous moment in time set her down the path towards a life filled with activism and action.
Hunter-Gault has been particularly able to influence change as a member of the media. She is a former foreign correspondent for NPR and PBS.
During her time at NPR, Hunter-Gault won two Emmys and a Peabody Award for her work on NewsHour. She was the National Association of Black Journalists' Journalist of the Year in 1986.
Hunter-Gault talked about her time at UGA with the 1992 memoir, "My Place." She serves as a member of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors and the Carter Center's Board of Trustees.
