Normally celebrity chefs are not known for their humanitarian work, but Jose Andres is a unique individual. He has been a leader when it comes to providing relief for people in the middle of crisis, ranging from last year’s California wildfires to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
His efforts have garnered notoriety among many throughout the country, perhaps culminating with his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize by Minnesota Congressman John Delaney. The Washington Post detailed the nomination and shared Delaney’s justification for the pick.
"Because of Mr. Andrés’s work, millions of people have been fed," said Delaney "This is the most basic human need and Mr. Andrés has proven to be world-class in this essential humanitarian field. With an incredible spirit and an innovative mind, Mr. Andrés is solving one of the world’s ancient problems and supplying world leaders with a new roadmap to provide more effective disaster relief in the future.“
Nobel laureates will officially be announced next October and, last year, there were over 300 candidates nominated. Andres may have long odds to get to the Nobel nod, but clearly, his efforts to help others are not going unnoticed.
In 2010, Andres founded the World Central Kitchen after the earthquake in Haiti. The organization helps organize local chefs, local produce and volunteers to feed people in need after various disasters.
The non-profit also helps communities become more self-sustainable with their food sources. For his efforts with the WCF, Andres won a 2015 National Humanities Medal.
As a restauranteur, Andres has over 30 establishments around the world. He is one of the main chefs credited with bringing the concept of small plates dining to the United States.
