Bestselling author Wil Haygood is one of America's most respected journalists. His work has particularly covered the civil rights movement, making him the ideal choice to keynote Purdue University's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
The event takes place on January 22 at 7 p.m. at the Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. "The Enduring Vision of Martin Luther King Jr." is free and open to the public.
Haygood's visit is also part of Purdue's Great Leaps Series, which celebrates the school's sesquicentennial. There are several other events the university is hosting this week to honor Dr. King.
Haygood's family roots in Selma, Alabama have provided him a fascination with the civil rights movement since he was a kid. He has gone on to write about many figures pivotal to the height of the movement, including Dr. King.
Haygood is a Pulitzer Prize nominee who has written eight books. His career in journalism spanned 30 years, working for the Washington Post and Boston Globe covering national and international stories.
Haygood is a fellow for the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He serves as a professor at his alma mater, Miami University.
