The University of Michigan is welcoming the country's foremost expert on antiracism education to campus next week. On Monday, Tim Wise will serve as keynote speaker for their 33rd annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium.
The theme of the event, which takes place in Hill Auditorium at 10 a.m., is "Unravel." Wise will discuss taking the mask off of institutional-isms.
He will also share the stage with UM's principal of the James and Grace Lee Boggs School, Julia Putnam. Everyone is welcome to attend the symposium for free and there will also be a live stream available.
Wise has published several books, including his most recent work, "Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America." He is the host of the podcast Speak Out with Tim Wise.
Wise has spoken to groups in all 50 states and at over 1,000 college and high school campuses. He began fighting against racism as a student activist, particularly calling for divestment from apartheid in South Africa.
Wise's first professional position was as Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Lousiana Coalition Against Racism and Naziism. He went on to be a community organizer, helping with public housing in New Orleans.
