William Saturno Biography

William Saturno has earned a number of National Geographic awards to help with his excavation of paintings and artifacts from the pre-Columbian Maya. The Dawn of Maya Gods and Kings, a National Geographic magazine story published in January 2006, was centered on his groundbreaking discovery at San Bartolo of the oldest intact Maya paintings ever discovered, and the June 2012 edition detailed his most recent discovery of murals at Xultn. At Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences as of 2008, Saturno holds a job as an assistant professor of archaeology. Saturno was a lecturer at the University of New Hampshire before taking a job at BU. Saturno and Franco Rossi stumbled upon what they think to be a Xultn record keeper's workspace in 2010. The Long Count calendar's predicted to end in 2012 has been placed in doubt by the presence of Mayan hieroglyphics at the site that depicts dates that are around 7000 years in the future.
