Walter Issacson Biography

Walter Isaacson is the president and CEO of the Aspen Institute, a Washington, DC-based nonpartisan educational and policy research organization. He began his career as a reporter for the Sunday Times of London, then moved on to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Before becoming TIME's 14th editor in 1996, he worked as a political correspondent, national editor, and editor of digital media. In 2001, he was named Chairman and CEO of CNN, and in 2003, he was named President and CEO of the Aspen Institute. He is the emeritus chair of Teach for America, an organization that hires young college graduates to teach in impoverished regions. He was the vice-chair of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, which oversaw the reconstruction following Hurricane Katrina, from 2005 to 2007. He was selected by President Barack Obama and approved by the Senate to serve as chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and other United States overseas broadcasts, a post he held from 2009 to 2012. He is an American Academy of Arts and Sciences member and serves on the boards of United Airlines, Tulane University, the New Orleans City Planning Commission, the New Orleans Tricentennial Commission, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Society of American Historians, the Carnegie Institution for Science, and the My Brothers Keeper Alliance.
