In 1949, Wang was born in New York City to wealthy foreign parents: Her mother was a warlord's daughter from China, while her father worked as an official in the pharmaceutical industry. The couple left China following the Communist uprising and ultimately settled in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Vera was a talented ice skater and attended the prestigious private schools Sarah Lawrence, Sorbonne, and Columbia. She was a real professional skater while she was a secondary school student at Chapin, but when she didn't make the 1968 Olympic team, as she explained in 2001, she looked to design to fill the void. Wang was employed by Yves Saint Laurent at the time Frances Patiky Stein, a proofreader for Vogue, began to investigate her. She joined the team in 1972 as Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg's sittings associate. During those years, the magazine was in transition, and the legendary Diana Vreeland had recently departed the Conde Nast office on Madison Avenue to be replaced by Grace Mirabella. In order to become a publication that was about reality, Vogue was transitioning from being a publication that was about fantasy green wigs and green nails as though anyone walked about like that. In 2001, Wang stated. We were responding to the demands of working women as well as the growing liberation of women. Wang quickly advanced to become one of Vogue's youngest-ever fashion editors. She stayed for a while, acquiring expertise in additional sittings but still holding aspirations of becoming a fashion designer in her own way. She quit Vogue in 1987 to pursue her ambition at Ralph Lauren. While planning her 1989 wedding to Arthur Becker, she realized she could fill a gap in the marriage industry since it had not advanced. In a meeting with her former supervisor, she subsequently revealed. There was no neck area innovation and no understanding of the fitment. A wedding dress and design have nothing in common. Nothing but terrible taste existed as well. I realized that by making a link, I could alter and refocus the whole bridal industry.
