For almost 15 years, Tonya Lewis Lee has been a creative force in children's books and media. Lewis Lee joined Nickelodeon to develop interstitial programming for them after leaving a position as a corporate lawyer. This programming included a variety of musicians, including Savion Glover, Gregory Hines, Whoopi Goldberg, and Queen Latifah. She also worked with Noggin/The N to produce the series Miracle's Boys and the documentary I Sit Where I Want: The Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education. She later collaborated with TVLand to produce the Wayne Brady-hosted series That's What I'm Talking About, and after that, she moved on to HBO where she wrote the screenplay for The Watsons Go to Birmingham. With her husband Spike Lee, Lewis Lee has co-authored three children's books, including Giant Steps to Change the World, Please Baby Please, and Please Puppy Please (2011). As the spokesperson for the Office of Minority's infant mortality awareness campaign, which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Lewis Lee has reached thousands of people with her message of health, wellness, and advocacy since 2007. She is also the co-author of the bestselling book Gotham Diaries. She has traveled the country sharing her thoughts on what the infant mortality rates mean for the country and what can be done to improve them with students, healthcare professionals, federal, state, and local government officials, academics and scholars, health agencies, pastors, and everyday people. Lewis Lee is an outspoken voice on problems of women and race, and she produced the movie Crisis in the Crib: Saving our Nation's Babies for the Office of Minority Health. Lewis Lee has been on local, national, and international television and radio around the nation. She has furthermore worked as a consultant for Fortune 500 firms and television news networks. She has written for publications including Avenue, Gotham, O at Home, and Glamour, where she provided two Michelle Obama campaign trail interviews from 2007 and 2008. Lewis Lee is Vice Chairman of the Board of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. She has won multiple accolades for her writing, producing, and advocacy work. She earned her undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
