The life of this television commentator and proponent of self-empowerment, Tony Brown, exemplifies the American ideal. Tony Brown has established himself as a producer, writer, educator, commentator on television, and director of motion pictures. He outlines the seven essential ideals that his mother instilled in him as a child and that have sustained and given purpose to his life in his compelling and intensely personal upcoming book, What Mama Taught Me, due out in April 2003. In other words, he claims that his Charleston, West Virginia, dishwasher and maid, "Mama," provided him with good health, material success, and pleasure. Two strong novels, Black Lies, White Lies: The Truth According to Tony Brown, which has sold 100,000 copies, and Empowers The People, were also written with Brown's distinctive intensity and vigor. Although Brown is a vocal supporter of using the market to solve social issues, his work as a journalist is what has made him most well-known. He serves as the commentator for Tony Brown's Journal, the longest-running PBS program. The New York Daily News named Brown's weekly television program as one of the top 10 programs of all time that portray positive Black imagery. The only current program in the top 10 was Tony Brown's Journal. In addition to Brown's many accomplishments as a media expert, Tony Brown Chicago can be heard on WLS (890 AM), the Chicago ABC Radio Networks affiliate and Disney ABC-owned station. The TV show was also nominated for the l991 NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding News, Talk or Information Series/Special." This educator and lecturer were named "Television's Civil Rights Crusader" in a cover story by Black Enterprise magazine. He organized a march in Detroit that featured Martin Luther King, Jr. and drew an estimated 500,000 people, making it possibly the largest civil rights march in America. He was chosen by Talkers, the prestigious radio trade magazine, as one of "the 100 most important radio talk show hosts in America." It's also thought that Dr. King gave his well-known "I Have a Dream" speech there for the first time. The Sales and Marketing Executives International Academy of Achievement presented him with the Ambassador of Free Enterprise Award because of his "interest in creating jobs and business through the Buy Freedom Network." Recently, USA Today chose him as one of the top five leaders to analyze the status of Black America. J.C. Penney Penney Corporation He got the Communicator of the Year Award from the Academy's national board of trustees before winning the 1995 Educator of the Year Award. The leaders of TBS, CBS, ABC, CNN, and numerous other large newspaper chains and national magazines are among the previous recipients of this distinguished prize. He was the first Black person to win either award. With its 1993 Community Service Award, the Institute For American Business recently honored Brown for his contributions to economic and community development. He earned the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Economic Empowerment Award (S.C.L.C.).
