Tim joined WH Smith in 1973 after working for Allied Breweries, where he was raised. When Tim was let go from WH Smith in 1982, he used #6000 of the severance money to launch the astonishingly successful Waterstone bookstores. He later raised $100,000 in venture financing and opened the first location of Waterstone's Booksellers on London's Old Brompton Road. Tim transformed British book shopping and made Waterstone famous as "the eponymous upmarket bookshop." One of the two or three biggest and most effective venture capital firms at the time was Waterstone. Nine years later, for #47 million, he sold the business to his former employers, only to acquire it back in 1998 along with EMI and Advent International! With over 200 locations presently, Waterstone is expanding globally. In London's Piccadilly neighborhood, Waterstone's opened the biggest bookstore in the world in September 1999. Since it was created by Waterstone, the business has profited from a steadfast strategy of fusing the purchasing power and marketing clout of several merchants with the high caliber of service connected with small bookstores. Tim now serves as a non-executive director of the Downing Classic Venture Capital Fund, FutureStart Venture Capital Fund of BT, National Gallery Publications, Yale University Press, and Yale University Press. He has authored three novels to date, as well as countless essays, programs, and books in general, literary, and business media. He also serves as an infrequent guest speaker at INSEAD, London Business School.
