Thomas Perez Biography

The current Secretary of Labor for the United States is a politician, consumer advocate, and civil rights attorney Thomas Edward Perez. Perez, a Democrat, previously held the position of Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. Buffalo, New York, birthplace Perez is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Brown University. Prior to working in the Justice Department from 1989 to 1995 as a federal prosecutor and deputy assistant attorney general for civil rights under Attorney General Janet Reno, Perez served as a legal clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. Until 1998, he was a Special Counselor for Senator Ted Kennedy. In the closing years of the Clinton administration, he was the Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Later, in 2002, Perez won a seat in the Montgomery County (Maryland) Council. From 2005 until the end of his term in 2006, he served as the council's president. He tried to compete in the Democratic primary for Maryland's attorney general but was rejected because he lacked 10 years of Maryland-specific legal expertise (he was admitted to the Maryland bar in 2001). From January 2007 until his Senate confirmation as Assistant Attorney General in October 2009, Perez served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation under Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley.
