About Theresa May
Theresa May Biography
Theresa May is a British politician who has been the leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 2016. In the general election of 1997, she won the seat of Maidenhead's first Member of Parliament (MP). She describes herself as a one-nation conservative in terms of ideology. May Brasier was raised in Oxfordshire as the daughter of a priest named Hubert Brasier and Zaidee Brasier (née Barnes). She served as a councilor for Durnsford in Merton while working for the Bank of England from 1977 to 1983 and the Association for Payment Clearing Services from 1985 to 1997. In the 1997 general election, she was elected as the MP for Maidenhead after making unsuccessful efforts to be elected to the House of Commons in 1992 and 1994. May served in a variety of capacities in the shadow cabinets of William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith, Michael Howard, and David Cameron between 1999 and 2010, including shadow work and pensions secretary and shadow transport secretary. From 2002 to 2003, she served as the Conservative Party's chairman. May was named Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities after the coalition government was formed following the 2010 general election. She resigned from the latter position in 2012. She was reappointed following the Conservative victory in the general election of 2015, and she went on to hold the position of home secretary for the longest period of time—more than 60 years—since James Chuter Ede. During her time in office, she worked to reform the Police Federation, enforced a stricter drug policy, including the outlawing of khat, oversaw the election of elected Police and Crime Commissioners, oversaw Abu Qatada's deportation, established the National Crime Agency, and imposed more immigration restrictions. May, the second woman to serve as prime minister after Margaret Thatcher, won an uncontested leadership election in July 2016 after Cameron announced his departure. In March 2017, Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 to start the UK's exit from the European Union. May declared an early general election for June in April 2017 in an effort to position herself better for Brexit talks. Due to the resulting hung parliament, in which the number of Conservative MPs decreased from 330 to 317, May was forced to negotiate a confidence and supply agreement with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Northern Ireland in order to secure support for May's minority administration.
