Marie Yovanovitch Biography

Marie L. Yovanovitch, a retired ambassador, is currently a Senior Fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She joined the ISD as a Senior State Department Fellow in the spring of 2019, following her role as the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, where she served from 2016 to 2019. Before her position in Ukraine, Yovanovitch held ambassadorial posts in the Republic of Armenia (2008-2011) and the Kyrgyz Republic (2005-2008). During her time at the Department of State, she also served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, where she was responsible for formulating policies related to European and global security issues, and as the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2004-2005. Yovanovitch retired from her career as a Career Minister in January 2020. She has a wealth of experience in the field, having held positions such as Dean of the Language school at the Foreign Service Institute, International Advisor, and Deputy Commandant at the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at the National Defense University, where she also taught national security strategy, and Deputy Director of the Russian Desk at the Department of State. She holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and a master's degree from National Defense University. Yovanovitch received numerous Presidential and State Department awards throughout her career, including the Secretary's Diplomacy in Human Rights Award.
