Stuart Eizenstat Biography

Ambassador Eizenstat has held a number of important senior positions during his ten years and a portion of open service in three US organizations, including White House household strategy advisor to President Jimmy Carter (1977–1981), U.S. diplomat to the European Union, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs, and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton Administration (1993-2001). He played a significant role in the advancement of important international initiatives during the Clinton Administration, including the Transatlantic Agenda with the European Union (establishing the framework for the US relationship with the EU), the Transatlantic Business Dialog (TABD) between European and US CEOs, and the exchange of agreements with the EU regarding the Helms-Burton Act and the Iran-Libya Sanctions. His position in the Clinton Administration as Special Representative of the President and Secretary of State on Holocaust-Era Issues was largely responsible for the zeal for providing deficient justice to Holocaust survivors and other victims of Nazi persecution during World War II. He successfully negotiated important agreements with the Swiss, Germans, Austrians, French, and other European countries about the installment of protective measures, the recovery of stolen handicraft ledgers, and compensation for property instalments for slave and confined employees.
