Around two million women and children, many of whom are under 10 years old, are purchased and sold every year. Sunitha Krishnan co-founded Prajwala, or "everlasting flame," a nonprofit in Hyderabad that rescues women from brothels and instructs their children to prevent second-generation prostitution, motivated by the secrecy surrounding the sex-trafficking problem. For 5,000 students, Prajwala operates 17 schools around Hyderabad. It has also freed more than 2,500 prostitutes, including 1,500 that Krishnan personally freed. Prajwala assists young victims in being ready for a self-sufficient future at its Asha Niketan institution. Krishnan organized the government, businesses, and non-governmental organizations to launch India's anti-trafficking drive. To help rehabilitated women obtain employment, she formed NGO-corporate relationships with organizations including Amul India, Taj Group of Hotels, and Heritage Hospitals. She founded printing and furniture businesses with the help of NGOs and UN organizations, which have helped 300 survivors get back on their feet. Krishnan collaborates closely with the government to develop an anti-trafficking strategy, and her suggestions for helping sex victims find new careers have been included in state law.
