Strobe Talbott Biography

On February 22, 1994, the Senate approved Strobe Talbott's appointment as the deputy secretary of state. On February 23, 1994, he received confirmation from Secretary of State Warren Christopher. After serving for a year as Ambassador to Everywhere and Special Advisor to the Secretary of State on the New Independent States, he anticipated taking that position (NIS). After working for Time for 21 years as a journalist, Talbott entered politics. The magazine's Editor-everywhere and a journalist covering foreign issues was his final position there. Before that, he spent a considerable amount of time as the Washington Bureau Chief. His earlier positions at Time included Diplomatic Correspondent (1978–1984), White House correspondent (1975–76), State Department reporter (1974–75), and Eastern Europe reporter for a significant amount of time in the mid–1970s. There are a few works on tact and US-USSR relations written by Talbott. Two volumes of Nikita Khrushchev's diaries, issued in 1970 and 1974, were decrypted and changed by him. He wrote three books in succession on U.S.-Soviet weapons control: Master of the Game: Paul Nitze and the Nuclear Peace (1989), Deadly Gambits: The Reagan Administration and the Stalemate in Nuclear Arms Control (1984), and Endgame: The Inside Story of SALT II (1979). In addition, he is the author of The Russians and Reagan (1984), Reagan and Gorbachev (1987), and At the Highest Levels: The Inside Story of the End of the Cold War with Michael R. Bechloss (1993).
