About Steve Sasson
Steve Sasson Biography
Steven Sasson is the creator of the digital camera and an American electrical engineer. Sasson received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1972 and 1973, respectively. He went to Brooklyn Technical High School and graduated. In 1975, Eastman Kodak's Steven Sasson created the first digital camera. It weighed 8 pounds (3.6 kg) and had a resolution of only 0.01 megapixels. The picture was recorded onto a cassette tape, which took 23 seconds to complete. His camera only captured black-and-white photographs. When he embarked on the electronic camera project, he envisioned a camera with no mechanical moving components in the future. Ragnhild Tomine (Endresen) and John Vincent Sasson raised Sasson in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was from Norway. His innovation began in 1975, when his boss at Eastman Kodak Company, Gareth A. Lloyd, gave him a wide assignment: develop an electronic camera utilizing a charge coupled device. The resultant camera was granted U.S. Patent 4,131,919. Sasson is presently working to defend Eastman Kodak Company's intellectual capital. On November 17, 2009, US President Barack Obama presented Sasson with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation during a ceremony in the White House's East Room. This is the highest distinction bestowed upon scientists, engineers, and inventors by the United States government. The Royal Photographic Society bestowed the Progress Medal and Honorary Fellowship on Sasson on September 6, 2012, "in recognition of any invention, research, publication, or other contribution that has resulted in an important advance in the scientific or technological development of photography or imaging in the broadest sense." Leica Camera AG honored Sasson by presenting him with a limited edition 18-megapixel Leica M9 Titanium camera (engraved with the serial number = 4,000,000). In 2011, Sasson was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
