Steve Lindsey Biography

Steve Lindsey (Retired Colonel USAF) is a former NASA astronaut and pilot engineer program director. He took part in five space transfer missions. Lindsey graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Engineering Sciences degree. He went on to guide preparation got his wings and filled in as a combat prepared pilot teacher pilot and academic educator in the RF-4C Phantom II after graduating from the Academy. Steve then attended graduate school at the Air Force Institute of Technology, where he earned a Master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Following graduation, he attended the USAF Test Pilot School and then worked as an Experimental Test Pilot in F-16 and F-4 aircraft. In 1995, he was chosen as a space tourist. Lindsey's first mission to space was as the pilot on STS-87 aboard Columbia. Leading testing with the US Microgravity Payload (USMP-4) and transporting and recovering the SPARTAN-201, a sunlight-based material science rocket designed to do distant sun detection, were critical. Furthermore, Steve directed the major trip of the AERCam Sprint, a free-flying mechanical camera, during one of the flight's spacewalks. STS-95 onboard Discovery was Lindsey's second flight as a pilot. Because prior Mercury Astronaut John Glenn was also a crewmember on this journey, this flight was of more importance. This was a SpaceHab expedition in which the team successfully completed 83 different science tests. On STS-95, the team was in charge of transporting and recovering the Spartan solar-powered observation shuttle, as well as directing the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Orbital Systems Tests (HOST) to approve portions for an upcoming HST adjustment mission. This critical is also recognized for being the first in-space use of a High Definition TV camera and for introducing the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) HDTV with life throughout the country inclusion of the dispatch."
