Yvonne Pendleton Biography

After graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Yvonne Pendleton began working at NASA Ames in July 1979. She graduated with a Master's in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in 1981 and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, both through NASA-sponsored programs (1987). Yvonne published 80 scientific papers while working as a research astrophysicist in the Space Science and Astrobiology Division from 1979 to 2005. Her work significantly advanced our knowledge of the beginnings and evolution of organic matter in the universe. The California Academy of Science and Asteroid elected her as a fellow. Due to Pendleton's contributions to research, the name was given to her. appointed to the position of Division Chief for Space Science and Astrobiology at NASA Ames Research Center. She oversaw a 160-person scientific and technical team in 2005. She gave the Associate Administrator of the Science Mission Directorate objective analyses and advice regarding NASA's science research initiatives and enhanced scientific output across the country as the time needed to analyze and award research funding was greatly decreased. She oversaw a team that handled the almost $50 million invested in EPO activities, including those from NASA's science missions, during that period and was also in charge of the Education and Public Outreach of NASA's Science Mission Directorate.
