Stephen Trachtenberg Biography

Stephen Joel Trachtenberg is one of today's most visible and energetic educational leaders. He has tremendously affected and molded the field of American higher education as a university president for over 30 years. Trachtenberg was The George Washington University's 15th president for over two decades, having arrived in 1988 from the University of Hartford, where he had been president for 11 years. He is presently President Emeritus and University Professor of Public Service at the University, as well as an adviser to Korn/Ferry International, where he is assisting in the recruitment of the next generation of university leaders. Trachtenberg was vice president for academic services and academic dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Boston University for eight years before joining the University of Hartford. Previously, he worked as a special assistant to the U.S. Education Commissioner at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C. for two years. He formerly worked as an attorney for the United States Atomic Energy Commission and as a legislative adviser to former Indiana Congressman John Brademas. Trachtenberg's most recent book, "Big Man on Campus: A University President Speaks Out on Higher Education," focuses on his years of experience reshaping America's educational environment and examines higher education's current situation. He has also written "Thinking Out Loud: The Wit and Wisdom of Stephen Joel Trachtenberg," "Reflections on Higher Education" (New Yorker Cartoon Bank), "Thinking Out Loud" (Oryx Press), and "Speaking His Mind" (Oryx Press) (Oryx Press). He is the co-editor of "The Art of Hiring at America's Colleges and Universities" (Prometheus Books). He contributed chapters to the books "Productivity Higher Education" (Peters Guide), "Leaders on Leadership: The College Presidency" (Jossey-Bass), and "Academic Leaders as Managers" (Peters Guide) (Jossey-Bass). His work has appeared in The Educational Record, The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges AGB Reports, Journal for Higher Education Management, The College Board Review, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, among other media. Trachtenberg has also consulted for The Journal of Education and The Presidency. Stephen holds a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University, a Juris Doctorate from Yale University, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. He is a Phi Beta Kappa member.
