Sheila Nevins Biography
Sheila Nevins is the President of HBO Documentary Films and an American television producer. She is one of the most significant persons in documentary filmmaking, having created over a thousand documentary films for HBO. She has worked on projects that have won over 65 Primetime Emmys, 46 Peabody Awards, and 26 Academy Awards. Nevins has more individual Primetime Emmy Awards than anybody else. Nevins was born in Manhattan, New York on April 6, 1939, to Stella, a chemist, and Benjamin Nevins, a Russian immigrant post office worker and bookmaker. Her mother had Raynaud's illness and scleroderma. Her uncle was a rich entrepreneur who contributed to her education. She didn't own a television till she was in high school. In New York City, she attended Little Red School House and the High School of Performing Arts. In 1960, she graduated from Barnard College with a BA in English. She obtained her MFA in Directing from the Yale School of Drama in 1963. In the 1960s, she married a Yale lawyer. Despite her desire to pursue a career in theater, her husband required her to stay home in the evenings and on weekends, forcing her to take a daytime job. Nevins began her career as an actor in Adventures in English for the United States Information Agency. She began working as a writer and producer for the in 1975. She also worked at Scribner, where she recorded books for blind people. Nevins worked as a researcher and then as an associate producer for National Educational Television. From 1971 to 1973, she worked with Alvin H. Perlmutter, conducting man-on-the-street interviews. She hired Albert and David Maysles to direct segments of the program after seeing the film. In 1973, Nevins worked as a Field Producer for ABC News. From 1973 to 1975, she wrote for Time-Life Films and briefly for 20/20. In 1978 and 1979, Nevins worked as a producer for CBS News Magazine. Nevins turned down Don Hewitt's offer to be a producer for.
