Sarah Barnett Biography

In BBC America, Sarah Barnett serves as president and general manager. Before her ten-year tenure at SundanceTV, she started her career there and held several positions in production and marketing. Her return to the firm in 2014 represents a return to her roots. Sarah Barnett oversaw all activities related to program creation and production, creative strategy, scheduling, and marketing, both on and off-channel, as president and general manager of Sundance Channel. This position was given to her in February 2013. Through simple, distinctive, intelligent, and amusing programs, Barnett rebuilt this iconic brand as a current and vital channel on the TV landscape. A dynamic, multi-platform brand that connects wealthy consumers with unique original content, Sundance Channel developed and was reenergized under her direction. With "Carlos," the Sundance Channel's first Golden Globe® Award-winning miniseries, "Appropriate Adult," Charlotte Rampling's SAG and Emmy®-nominated performance in "Restless," and most recently, the critically acclaimed scripted series "Rectify," from Ray McKinnon and the "Breaking Bad" producers, Barnett launched the Sundance Channel's scripted strategy. A record 10 Prime Time Emmy® nominations for "Top of the Lake" and "Restless," two of Sundance Channel's original productions, were given to the network in 2013. She developed the highly acclaimed series "Push Girls," the social media hit "Girls Who Like Guys Who Like Boys," and executive produced two seasons of the Peabody Award-winning and Emmy–nominated "Brick City" while leading the network's unscripted original programming. Since 2009, Barnett has been executive vice president and general manager. Before taking on this position, Barnett served as Sundance Channel's vice president of marketing, where she was in charge of the brand's whole strategic and creative marketing. Barnett moved from BBC America, where she was vice president of on-air, to Sundance Channel. Before joining BBC America, Barnett worked for the BBC in London for 12 years, directing and producing for radio and television on several BBC channels, including the major broadcast networks and the first BBC digital cable network. Barnett received her BA in art history from the University of Warwick in the British West Midlands. In 2010, 2011, and 2012, she was included on CableFAX's "CableFAX 100" and "Most Powerful Women in Cable" lists. Multichannel News designated her a "woman to watch" in 2012.
