Robert knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age. Born in Maplewood, N.J., to immigrant parents — who tried ... with little success ... to steer their son in the direction of a "practical" career like medicine or teaching — Robert started designing jewelry as a teen-ager. With his baubles in tow, Robert would ditch class to catch the train to Manhattan, where he'd hawk his wares to stores downtown, such as Canal Jeans. Robert went on to secure a spot as the style consultant for Gay Entertainment Television, interviewing such high-profile guests as designers Cynthia Rowley and Tommy Hilfger, Ivana Trump, David Bowie and Rosie O'Donnell.
