Nina Davuluri Biography

Nina Davuluri (Miss New York, 2013) was crowned Miss America 2014 at the birthplace of the legendary competition: Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. Nina became the second consecutive Miss New York and the first contestant of Indian descent to win the Miss America Competition.

Nina's acceptance of the highly-prized crown represents the first step in a journey that will take her to every corner of the nation during her year of service as Miss America 2014.

Over the course of the coming year, Nina will log 20,000 miles per month as she travels the country to address an array of audiences about her platform: “Celebrating Diversity through Cultural Competency.” As part of her consciousness-raising efforts on behalf of diversity, Nina has launched a social media campaign to encourage constructive and civil dialogue on diversity issues. Through her social media channels, Davuluri has asked people to share “representative thoughts and stories about their experiences on how we as a nation can advance cultural awareness."

While she works in support of her own platform, Nina will serve as the official National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the national platform partner of the Miss America Organization. In addition, Nina will act as the official spokesperson for R.E.I.G.N. Cosmetics, Joseph Ribkoff, Inc. and Catalina Swimwear, sponsors of the Miss America Organization.

Nina initially became involved in competitions as a way to earn college tuition. She was named Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen in 2006 (the title earned her a $25,000 scholarship that enabled her to graduate debt-free from the University of Michigan); in 2013 she was named Miss Syracuse and, later, Miss New York.

After her year of service as Miss America, Nina will use her cumulative scholarship winnings to attend attend medical school. (Chief among those is a $50,000 scholarship that comes with the Miss America title, provided by the Miss America Organization.)

In the meantime, along with her other duties, Nina will work with the US Department of Education to raise awareness about the importance of education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Nina cites her parents as ranking high among her sources of inspiration; to honor them and her cultural heritage, Nina performed a “Classical Bollywood Fusion Dance” during the talent segment of the Miss America competition. Nina hopes that her year of service as Miss America will encourage others to be proud of their own heritage while also accepting every other culture around the world.
