A fifty-foot wall of water erupted in the night, one thousand miles from shore, and flipped the little yacht upside down. This near-fatal capsize was the trigger for transformation in McFadyen's life, and he still uses it as motivation to keep pushing himself and others to new heights. He became the youngest Australian to reach the North Pole eighteen months after returning from Antarctica. McFadyen later returned to the North Pole as an expedition leader on two more occasions.
