Mark Bradford Biography

In 1961, Mark Bradford was born in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia with a BFA in 1995 and an MFA in 1997. Bradford uses scavenged materials to create wall-sized collages and installations that respond to the spontaneous networks that arise inside a city, such as underground businesses, migrant communities, or popular appropriation of abandoned public space. Bradford's art is informed as much by his personal history as a third-generation merchant in southern California as it is by the global heritage of abstract painting created in the twentieth century. Bradford's films and multilayered paper collages allude not just to the layout of streets and buildings in downtown Los Angeles, but also to pictures of crowds, ranging from 1960s civil rights rallies to current immigration protests. Bradford is the recipient of several honors, including the Bucksbaum Award (2006), the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2003), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award (2002). Major exhibits of his work have been held in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2006), the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (2003), REDCAT in Los Angeles (2004), and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2001). He has shown work at the 27th Bienal de So Paulo (2006), the Whitney Biennial (2006), and “inSite: Art Practices in the Public Domain,” both in San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico (2005). Bradford is a Los Angeles-based artist.
