About Lulu Garcia-Navarro
Lulu Garcia-Navarro Biography
Both Weekend Edition Sunday and one of NPR's morning news podcasts, Up First, are hosted by Lulu Garcia-Navarro. She is notorious in NPR's IT division for losing computers to gunshots, hurricanes, and bomb explosions. She worked as an NPR journalist posted in Brazil, Israel, Mexico, and Iraq before joining the Sunday morning crew. She spent months drawing a rich and colorful portrayal of a country at war after becoming one of the first reporters to visit Libya following the start of the 2011 Arab Spring rebellion. Garcia-Navarro documented history in the making with astounding insight, bravery, and empathy, sometimes at the great personal danger. Garcia-Navarro received the 2011 George Foster Peabody Award, the Lowell Thomas Award from the Overseas Press Club, the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Gracie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement from the Alliance for Women and the Media for her coverage of the Arab Spring. She contributed to NPR News' coverage of Iraq, which won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton in 2007 and a 2005 Peabody Award. Additionally, she has received recognition for her work on migration in Mexico and the Brazilian Amazon. Garcia-Navarro and her crew have also won a Gracie for their coverage of the #MeToo movement since joining Weekend Edition Sunday. She is working diligently to ensure that Weekend Edition has voices from people who will shock, enthrall, and inspire you, wherever they may be. Garcia-Navarro began her career in journalism as a freelancer for Voice of America and the BBC World Service. Before switching to AP Radio, she later worked as a producer for Associated Press Television News. Garcia-Navarro covered post-9/11 developments in Jerusalem and Afghanistan when he was there. Before the American-led invasion, she was sent to work for the AP in Iraq, where she remained to cover the war. Garcia-Navarro has a Georgetown University Bachelor of Science in international relations and a City University of London Master of Arts in journalism.
