Larry Brilliant's career path has proven deserving of his surname, as unexpected as it is inspiring. In the early 1970s, he was living in a Himalayan monastery when his teacher informed him he should help eradicate smallpox from the globe. He became involved in the World Health Organization's smallpox eradication initiative, oversaw efforts to eradicate the illness in India, and finally presided over the world's last case of smallpox. He didn't stop at curing one ailment; he formed the charity Seva Foundation, which has healed more than two million people in 15 nations of blindness (through innovative surgery, self-sufficient eye care systems, and low-cost manufacturing of intraocular lenses). He found time outside of medicine to co-establish The Well, a famed online community, and to oversee two public technology firms. He's been dubbed a technological visionary by Time and WIRED publications. He asked the TED community to help him establish a worldwide early-response system to identify new diseases or disasters as soon as they appear or occur, as part of his 2006 TED Prize desire. Google executives recruited Brilliant to lead their new philanthropy arm, Google.org, shortly after he received the TED Prize. He was able to leverage Google's wits and billions in a combination of for-profit and charity businesses solving the global challenges of illness, poverty, and climate change by consulting on the WHO's polio eradication effort and building a disease-surveillance network. Larry Brilliant is currently President and CEO of the Skoll Global Threats Fund, where he leads a team tasked with combating global threats to humanity such as pandemics, climate change, water security, nuclear proliferation, and the Middle East conflict.
