Kate Gerson Biography

UnboundEd's Chief Executive Officer is Kate Gerson. Kate has led the creation and implementation of curriculum and professional learning, as well as training transformative school leaders and serving as a high school teacher and principal. Kate establishes the vision and manages the design, implementation, and quality of all programs as a managing partner of programs. Kate was the Regents Research Fund's senior fellow for educator engagement, where she led the design and implementation of EngageNY.org, New York State's innovative curriculum, training, and professional development tools connected to higher educational standards. She formerly worked as the executive director of the national charity New Leaders, where she mentored and educated future school leaders. Kate led program design and execution for principal recruitment, selection, evaluation, and training, organizational change management, and leadership coach development as Executive Director of Academic Programs for New Leaders for New Schools from 2007 to 2010. She has advised on quality instruction and an emphasis on teaching and learning at all levels of the system across the country. Reforming the Principalship, a contribution to Frederick Hess' Urban School Reform: Lessons from San Diego, was co-authored by Kate and Jon Schnur, co-founder of New Leaders for New Schools. Kate began her teaching career in high school English Language Arts in Indianapolis, where she twice earned the Indianapolis Star's ACE Award for excellence in teaching. Later, she worked as a teacher and a leader at Humanities Preparatory Academy in New York City, where she taught English Language Arts and African American history and literature. Kate was part of the first cohort of New Leaders for New Schools in New York City, where she created, launched, and successfully managed South Brooklyn Community High School, a model transfer school for over-aged, under-credited kids that has now been replicated more than 15 times. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.A. in Women's Studies and Indiana University with an M.A. in Language Education.
