John MacLean Biography

In June 1988, while riding his bike near his hometown for fitness training, John Maclean was hit by an 8-tonne truck. The impact caused multiple fractures in John's pelvis and back, a fragmented sternum, punctured lungs, a broken arm, and rendered John paraplegic. Despite the grief of what he had lost, the excruciating physical pain, and the obstacles of daily life in a wheelchair, John resolved to become bigger and stronger than ever. He set about proving himself in the world's most difficult sporting events. In 1995, John made history by becoming the first wheelchair athlete to complete the course at the world's most difficult multi-discipline sporting event, the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, drawing on all of his inner strength to continue to the finish line despite falling outside the able-bodied cut-off times on the bike section. The following year, John missed the cut-off time again, this season due to a flat tyre, but he still completed the entire course. He not only finished within the able-bodied cut-off times in 1997, but he also beat a third of the field to become the first wheelchair category winner. John was the first non-American to be inducted into the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon Hall of Fame in 2002.
