John Kenagy Biography

With 20 years experience as a vascular surgeon, Dr. John Kenagy specializes in healthcare as a physician. He is also a patient, scholar, executive and advisor. For a multi-state, nonprofit healthcare delivery system, he was Chief of Staff and Regional Vice President for Business Development and also Chief of Surgery. He suffered a broken neck after falling from a tree and sustained an injury. This incident showed his frustration with the current healthcare methods and he realized that his recovery was dependent on the efforts and support of dedicated healthcare individuals working in an unresponsive and unpredictable system. He became a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Business School because he was searching for answers that would help him. He collaborated with Harvard Professor Clayton Christensen in his research which involved developing disruptive innovation healthcare strategy and translating to healthcare the drivers for success in resilient, highly adaptive companies like Apple, Toyota and Intel. The result was a self-sustaining system for developing, doing and improving patient care within and across disciplines called Adaptive Design. In addition to this research, he wrote a guidebook to increase care at a lower cost titled Designed to Adapt: Leading Healthcare in Challenging Times; and it was named the 2011 Book of the Year by the American College of Healthcare. His contributions were acknowledged by The University of Pittsburgh and The University of Washington. Kenagy was described as “the man who would save healthcare” in a feature by Forbes.
