About Johanna Mair
Johanna Mair Biography
Johanna is the Hewlett Foundation Visiting Scholar at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society and as of September 2012 a Professor of Management, Organization and Leadership at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. She currently serves as the academic editor of Stanford Social Innovation Review.
Her research lies at the intersection of traditional strategy and entrepreneurship. More specifically, she is interested in how institutions stifle and enable social and economic progress and the role of entrepreneurial actors in this process. Projects in progress focus on the emergence of venture philanthropy in Europe and market building and inclusive growth strategies in developing countries. Johanna held various visiting positions at Stanford University, Harvard Business School and Copenhagen Business School and was appointed a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford in 2006.
At IESE her teaching centered around corporate strategy and entrepreneurial strategies for social impact at the MBA, Global Executive MBA and Executive Education programs; strategy research on the Ph.D. program; and course design on the International Faculty Development Program. In addition she co-teaches a PhD course on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University serves on the academic board and teaches in the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Program (ISEP); and collaborates with the Harvard Kennedy School in the Leadership Program for NGO's in Europe.
Johanna has received numerous awards for her research and publications. In 2007 she was recognized as a "Faculty Pioneer" by the Aspen Institute and received the Ashoka Award for Social Entrepreneurship Education. Her research was awarded the 2007 Strategic Management Society "Best Paper for Practice Implications Award" and the 2008 Gold Prize of the IFC-Financial Times Essay Competition (jointly with Christian Seelos). In addition, IESE honored her research and teaching activities with the Annual Research Excellence Award in 2005 and 2007.
She is the co-editor of three books on social entrepreneurship and has written or co-written numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles and articles on management practice. She serves on the editorial board of several academic journals. She has also published numerous case studies and teaching notes.
Before earning her Ph.D. in management from INSEAD (France), Johanna was directly involved in many aspects of the executive decision-making process in international banking. Today, alongside her academic duties she is chairing the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation at the World Economic Forum, is a member of the board of advisors of the ERSTE Foundation.
