Jeff Moss Biography

Jeff Moss has been a hacker for more than two decades. Jeff created DEF CON, the world's largest hacker community and event, in 1992. Five years later, he founded Black Hat, a series of technical conferences showcasing the most recent security research. Jeff was named to the DHS Homeland Security Advisory Council in 2009, a group of subject matter experts that advise the DHS Secretary. Jeff was appointed Vice President and Chief Security Officer of the Internet Corporation for Assigning Names and Numbers in 2011. ICANN is a non-profit organization responsible for organizing and assuring the security, stability, and robustness of the Internet's unique global identifiers such as IP address allocations, AS and protocol numbers, as well as digitally signing and maintaining the Internet's root zone. Jeff is particularly suited to bridge the gap between the underground researcher community and law enforcement, between pure research and appropriate implementation. As a result, he is a popular conference keynote speaker and has been quoted in the Associated Press, CNN, New York Times, Reuters, Vanity Fair, and the Wall Street Journal. Moss won the ICSA President's Award for Public Service in 2011, and he was selected as story #50 in Discovery Magazine's top 100 stories of 2012. Prior to joining ICANN, Moss was the creator and CEO of Black Hat, where he continues to serve as Conference Chair. He was a director of Secure Computing Corporation, where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Professional Services Department in the United States, Asia, and Australia. He has also worked in the Information System Security branch of Ernst & Young, LLP. Moss earned a BA in Criminal Justice from Gonzaga University. He presently serves on the Advisory Council of the United States Department of Homeland Security and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
