About Haley Scott DeMaria

Haley Scott DeMaria Biography

My tale begins in the early hours of January 24, 1992, as detailed in the book, but the basis of the story begins in my youth, with a family so deeply embedded in my life that I could rely on them when my life was uprooted. When our entire lives were turned upside down. Haley Adella Scott was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on August 4, 1973. I was born and raised in Arizona. My father is the same way. Growing up, I had various nicknames, some of which were more revealing than others. P.I.N., or "Pain In The Neck," was my grandmother's nickname for me. She adored me, but I was a headstrong and fiercely independent youngster. I came up with my own moniker, which was essentially a wish list of who I wanted to be: Adella Haley Fonzarelli Cinderella Scott, Eloise Vandeweghe My father has always referred to me as H.Adella. That is my personal fave. I have two siblings: a five-year-old brother named Stephen and a five-year-old sister named Mary Frances. We grew up like any other siblings, playing together, teasing and aggravating one another. There was always a lot of affection, though. Stephen Sr. and Charlotte, my parents, always supported and pushed us to be and do our best. Anything less than our best effort was not acceptable. When I began competitive swimming at the age of ten, I had no idea that I was embarking on a path that would drastically transform my life. I swam for a USA Swimming club team, Xavier College Preparatory High School, and subsequently the University of Notre Dame. There is nothing in my life that I am more proud of than being a Notre Dame athlete, with the exception of my family. When I hear the battle song, I still feel shivers, and when I sing the alma mater, I still weep. For my recovery and return to swimming as a Notre Dame athlete, I received several national and regional awards, including the Spirit of Notre Dame Award, the Executive Journal Comeback of the Year Award (1993), The Honda Award for Inspiration (1993-94), and The Gene Autry Courage in Sport Award (1994). In June 1994, I was selected Woman of the Year at the National Women's Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, and a Fellow at the Institute for International Sport in Providence, RI (June 1995). I've also spoken at events including the National Sorority Conference, Rotary Clubs, and a Nurses Appreciation Dinner as the keynote speaker. I got the opportunity to speak about my experience as well as my love and gratitude for every one who assisted me at each of these gatherings or ceremonies. Speaking to people about my rehabilitation is touching, satisfying, and motivating. It is a gift to be able to spread hope. I returned to Phoenix, Arizona, after graduating from Notre Dame to teach and coach at Xavier University. Working at Xavier was once again a satisfying and meaningful experience that aided in the development of my spiritual path. It was around this time that I decided to become a Catholic. My stay at Notre Dame undoubtedly contributed to this. While being accepted by – and living in – a Catholic community, I had a dreadful experience. When I couldn't walk, that community scooped me up, or to take a line from the great novella "Footprints," they carried me. Both literally and metaphorically. At Xavier, the Catholic feeling of community and religion was reinforced for me after I left the secure cocoon of Notre Dame. It was a simple decision to join the Catholic Church, and it was really just a continuation and formality of the life I was already leading.
